The Listening Library quickly improves your English Listening Skills with three EFL/ESL courses offering listening and reading skills practice at all levels from elementary to advanced.
Why a ESL listening library course?
There are many different reasons for learning a language and many different ways of doing it. But - if you want to communicate orally then you need to understand what the other person is saying. If you want to speak English fluently then you need a very advanced English listening comprehension level.
The better your listening ability the easier it is to speak. Think of a sponge. Put a little water on the sponge and you need to squeeze hard to get the water out. Fill the sponge with water and it flows out easily. The more you listen and understand the easier it is for words to flow out of your “sponge”.
Who for?
Anyone who wants to improve their English listening skills to to speak better English, especially EFL or ESL students.

What is the ESL Listening Library?
It is probably the most extensive source of graded listening activities on the web, with hundreds of hours of input to improve listening and reading skills.
It contains over 1000 items including a wide variety of:
- monologues
- dialogues
- conversations
- talks and lectures
- radio extracts and videos
- many different accents
There's a wide choice of subjects in the listening library which allows you to select the items that you find interesting and enjoyable.
Each item has a text, which you can print, and a recording facility to imitate the speaker(s).
There are progress tests at Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced level.
Practice EFL or ESL listening exams are included. These cover all the major exams including CAMBRIDGE KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, BEC Preliminary, BEC Vantage and BEC Higher.
How will it help me? It will:
- improve your ability to understand spoken (and written) English
- attune your ears to pronunciation
- build your vocabulary
- help you with both writing and grammar
- and, most importantly, it will make speaking in English a lot easier.
How should I use the ESL Library?
- 1. Read the questions
- 2. Listen to the listening activity once, twice or more
- 3. Answer the questions, if you like
- 4. Check your answers
- 5. Listen again whilst reading the text
- 6. Practice English pronunciation by imitating the speaker, if you like
Obviously: if you find the extracts difficult move down a unit, level (eg. from A2 to A1). Likewise: if you find the extracts easy to understand move up a level or move up to the next course.
How many hours should I spend on the Listening Library?
This depends on your aim and how quickly you want to achieve it? The more hours you spend doing listening activities the better you become.
If you spend a 100 hours on a level then with two hours a week you should master a level in a year. With 2 hours a day you could master all the levels in a year.
If you want to speak English then listening is the most important skill to master. Brays ESL Listening Library English courses will help you achieve this mastery.
