Meaning 1, to stop working, usually machinery, when it stops working. For example, when my wife was pregnant and was about to have the baby, I was driving her to the hospital but the car broke down so we had to catch a lift from the milkman who was passing in his milk float.
Meaning 2 is to lose control emotionally or mentally. My brother broke down and cried last year when Manchester United beat Liverpool in the football.
