Brays Video Collection – English Phrasal Verbs, Give up
Script (guión): Phrasal verbs, ‘give up’ which has three meanings.
Meaning one: surrender yourself usually to someone. For example if I robbed a bank while I was inside the bank, if the police started to surround the building on every exit, I would possibly have two options. Option one would be to grab a hostage and take him outside. However option number two probably would be to give up. I would go outside with my hands in the air and say, ‘Ok, I'm coming out, I give up.’
Meaning two: is to stop trying to do something often because it is too difficult. For example, I tried playing a game of golf against Tiger Woods last week but after the first few holes though Tiger said, ‘I give up.’ He couldn't keep up with me. I said, ‘Tiger, I think you should be changing your name to Kitten.’
Meaning three: to stop doing or having something, often, usually some kind of habit. I've recently given up drinking in the mornings because I keep spilling my breakfast.
